Need Gift Ideas This Holiday Season?

By: Mike Collette (Owner of Prototype Training Systems)

Who doesn’t love the gift of fitness on the holidays?!

Maybe you have a friend or family member that’s a fitness junkie?  Or maybe you can’t decide what you want for gifts this holiday?

Whatever the reason, we got you covered with a TON of fitness gift ideas for this holiday season!

DO THIS FIRST:

When doing your shopping this year, remember that a lot is being done online. If you are shopping in person at the big stores, it’s best to check the deals that are going online as well as some businesses might price match online vs. in-store.

“Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” have already gone by, but the average sales online last much longer than a couple of days.

One of the tools that YOU ABSOLUTELY need to download is a widget that you can add to your google chrome browser called Wikibuy (owned by Capital One). Download and install it and it will search the internet for the best sale codes for the items that you are looking for! You’re welcome : )

If you want to support SMALL BUSINESSES and #SHOPLOCAL we would greatly appreciate you checking out what we have for you at Prototype if you’re looking for some extra gifts!

Functional Training Sneakers:

This is by far the biggest question that we get asked: “What kind of shoes should I buy to work out in?” That question always comes with a “that depends” answer as everyone’s feet (arches, width, etc) are different. But overall, when you are doing functional training you want to have a relatively flat sneaker that is versatile enough for the demands of the various movements you are doing.  If you’re going to be running, lifting weights and other functional movements, here are a few that you should check out:

Olympic Weightlifting Shoes

Do you or a family member love Olympic weightlifting? If that’s the case, a pair of weightlifting specific shoes are an ABSOLUTE necessity. These shoes provide a more stable base or support and a slightly elevate heal to assist with the positions that you get into when performing the Olympic lifts (Snatch and Clean & Jerk). These are also great for traditional weight training exercises such as your back squat and front squat. Here are a few that you should check out:

Fitness Tracker

A fitness app or tracker is the perfect gift for someone who loves to workout! There are several on the market now, so it’s good to do your diligence on each one and to find one that aligns with your budget. My personal favorite is the WHOOP strap. This is one of the few that is low-cost upfront but has a monthly subscription fee that you pay. It tracks how much you strain (exertion score) each day, how you slept and recovered and it even tells you your respiratory rate which is AMAZING data that can identify if you’re getting sick. Here is a list of a few of the best workout trackers:

Dietary Supplements

There are a TON of supplements out there and a lot of misinformation on things. If you’re looking to get this for yourself or as a gift, the first thing that you want to do is talk to a coach or do your research on what products would be the best for you based on what you would like to achieve. Supplements are exactly that: they supplement what you are already doing. Since I do not have experience with every supplement brand, I will tell you my favorite and most trusted brand that we sell at Prototype is Driven Nutrition products. Here is a list of a few supplements I would look into buying if you want to improve your training and recovery:

  • Whey Protein
  • Amino Acids
  • Creatine
  • CBD Oil (Charlottes Web)

*We sell all of these at Prototype*

Fitness Membership

Whether you’re looking to change your lifestyle or get back into shape after what has been a tough year, there is no better investment in your health than to have something that will hold you accountable! If accountability is a big area for you, we always recommend working with a trainer or a coach to help prescribe the right plan and program for you.

  • Fitness Equipment
    • This has been a hard year to get at-home fitness equipment due to lack of supply and high demand! Check out Facebook marketplace for some local deals or visit Roguefitness.com and get on their waitlist for anything from Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells to Bikes and Rowers!
  • Gymnastics Grips
    • Don’t want to rip your hands when doing pull-ups or gymnastics movements on the pull-up bar? Grab a pair of grips to prevent tearing!
  • Gym Bag
    • I personally don’t carry around a gym bag (well, because I own a gym!) BUT if you’re looking for something like this for yourself or a loved one, you want to get something that is big enough to fit ALL THE STUFF on the list above! Here is a couple:

  • Gym Chalk
    • Do your hands get sweaty when working out? Use this to help you keep a grip on your barbell, kettlebell, or pull up bar!

We hope this helps you this holiday season!!! Now get to the shopping!
