Prototype of the Month: Mike Bisset (aka SKINNY MIKE)

the guys

(Skinny Mike, Big Marc and Big Nick)

My pursuit of fitness started when I was in middle school. I was an out of shape nerd who got picked on constantly and I got fed up with it. I started doing Tae Kwon Do, which got me in shape, but the getting picked on did not. Fortunately people grow up. I started doing track and field in high school because my older sister did as well. At the time I hated running and would not do races that were over 400 meters long. Once I got to college I coasted through fitness for a while until I broke my hand and did not do anything for about 5 months. At the end of that time my hand was healed but I was very out of shape and I was not ok with that. I did not like running but knew that it was good for me, so I started running … a lot. I learned to like running. After graduating college and figuring out that I wanted to become a police officer I put myself through a full time police academy. I was easily one of the smallest guys there, but I put on 20 lbs. through the 21 weeks. That was a really big accomplishment for me since I was so nervous the first week I kept throwing everything up. Got myself on the job fulltime now and I love it. I knew that I needed to stay in shape once I started working though, which is what brought me to CFP.
One of the fittest guys in my academy class was a CrossFitter and he insisted that I should give it a try. I googled “CrossFit near me” and CFP was one of two nearby. Bethany Farrar was the first person I met at CFP and she told me that it was a really welcoming place where persons of all different kinds of fitness backgrounds and goals would be happy. I decided to join then and there and I have never been disappointed. The first Elements class I took kicked me right in the butt (I puked twice during the WOD) and I was back again the next morning. I was hooked. I have been at CFP for close to 2 years now and I know that I am at the right gym. The people (members and coaches) are all so positive and supportive, it is impossible for me not to have a great time.
Being a part of CFP has helped me increase my fitness level which in turn has made doing the things I like to do easier. I am a rather diverse person when I am not working a stupid number of hours. I like to go for hikes, play pick up soccer games with friends, do cookouts, go to the movies or out for dinner and read, along with a whole host of other things that can not fit on this page.
Being a fit person is extremely important to me because it keeps my body healthy and it also helps to keep me safe when I am working. The workouts that I have done at CFP have definitely challenged me and it is really great to see myself achieving goals that I had set for myself.  I still have a lot of room for improvement in many areas and I intended on working on them. My flexibility is abysmal and I would like to be much stronger. I have been getting a lot of help from the coaches and members at CFP to improve these areas of my fitness and I really appreciate that. This gym and the people that are a part of it make me feel like I have a place where I can really be myself and just have fun with some really great people.
