Prototype of the Month: Nick Fotos

1.) Share you CrossFit Prototype experience and fitness journey
Most of my life I had been in pretty decent shape, but about halfway through college I pretty much stopped working out or doing any other form of physical activity. A few months after graduating in May 2014, I decided that I needed to get in shape again for a multitude of reasons. I initially tried working out alone at BSC, but there was no accountability, and it was very easy to convince myself not to go. I had been hearing about Crossfit for years, but had been hesitant to give it a shot due to the perceived “danger” of Crossfit, especially since I had dealt with back problems for years and was worried about the risk of injuring myself again. In February of this past year I attended my first Elements class and haven’t looked back since.
2.) What is your favorite part about being at CFP?
My favorite parts of being at CFP are the people and being able to challenge myself in different ways every day. When I did work out a typical gym, I would put my headphones in and not talk to anyone the entire time I was there. Having a group of people from all different walks of life to work out with everyday definitely helps motivate me to push myself harder that I ever thought I could. In addition, the style of workouts allow me to challenge myself in a myriad of ways that I had never imagined. Whether it be maxing out a lift, testing conditioning, or even seeing how many double unders I can do, each day presents a new challenge.
3.) What are you hobbies and activities?
My main hobbies are hanging out with my friends and family. I’m a big Boston sports fan, so I spend a lot of time watching games, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. Depending on the season, I also really enjoy golfing and skiing.
4.) How has (if it has) CFP helped you outside the gym (in sports etc)?
CFP has definitely helped me outside of the gym. This past summer, I noticed that the distance on my golf shots had increased substantially, which I think is largely due to increased strength as a result of Crossfit. The increases in my strength and gains in conditioning that I have seen since joining CFP have manifested themselves in a number of ways into my everyday life, whether it be being able to play a basketball game without feeling like I am about to die or being able to carry more things when doing yard work.
5.) What are you continuing fitness goals to this point?
I think my main goal right now is probably to build up my conditioning. I’d also like to continue getting stronger, but I think I would like to make conditioning more of a priority. I’d also like to become more proficient in certain skills that I have struggled with, specifically double-unders and hand stand push ups. Finally, I’d also like to get a bar muscle up.
